Procedure to find Cp & Cpk Values:

Cp & Cpk Values can be found by one of the two procedures listed below:

(A)RMS Method: This method is used normally to find the Cp & Cpk values for Grinding, Honing machines etc. In case of Milling & Turning machines, this method is used, if we have to calculate Cm & Cmk Values.

(B)Range Method: This method is used for finding out Cp & Cpk Values for Turning & Milling Machines.

(A)RMS Method:

Terminology:

б: Sigma or Standard Deviation

Xav: Average of all the readings

X1, X2,…. Xn: Various Readings Noted Serially.

n:no. of Readings

HSL: Upper Limit of Tolerance

LSL: Lower Limit of Tolerance

TOLERANCE= HSL – LSL

Cpk1 = ((HSL - Xav) / 3 б)

Cpk2 = ((LSL - Xav) / 3 б)

Ideally Cpk1 ≈Cpk2

However Practically, it is never so. Hence one of the two Cpk , whichever is lower is taken as the actual Cpk.

If Cpk1 < >Cpk2(if both the values are not very close), please repeat the process.

(B)Range Method:

Terminology:

Rav = Average value of all the groups

d2=It is a Constant & it’s value is 2.326 if we select a group

of 5 readings. For other group size, I have no data. I will

furnish it as soon as I get it.

R1, R2,…Rn = Average of a Group of 5 readings.

For Example, we take 30 readings of a diamension as follows:

X1, X2, X3, X4, X5----------------- Average is R1

X6, X7, X8, X9, X10----------------- Average is R2

………………….

………………….

X21, X22, X23, X24, X25----------------- Average is R5

X26, X27, X28, X29, X30----------------- Average is R6

Rav = ((R1+R2+Rn-1+Rn) / n)

In our Case:

Rav = ((R1+R2+R3+R4+R5+R6) / 6)

б = (Rav / d2)

Cpk1 = ((HSL - Xav) / 3 б)

Cpk2 = ((LSL - Xav) / 3 б)

Ideally Cpk1 ≈Cpk2

However practically, it is never so. Hence one of the two Cpk , whichever is lower is taken as the actual Cpk.

If Cpk1 < >Cpk2(if both the values are not very close), please repeat the process.
